I think you should conduct a compression test on the engine. This will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine and coming back here with the results will give the Brickboarders information on which to base their advice.

Some auto parts chains loan tools for free. See if one in your area offers a compression gauge. Make sure you conduct the compression test in a consistant manner on each cylinder because you will be comparing each cylinder with the others in determining a course of action.

If you need instructions on doing a compression test be sure to ask rather than guess.
