changed heater core - now AC not working 700

Great - my heater core on my '87 740 turbo broke in winter time and i by-passed it at the time. Now i found time to change it and it heats great - but now is summer, no real need there. Therefore it is hot now and my AC doesn't work anymore (which was working in winter or better before i changed the heater core)
I think i hooked up everything right, but i don't hear the vacuum sound when i change the "slider" to the AC setting.
Any ideas, before i go in there and start messing around?!?
