Alternator bad? 200

I gunned the car at an intersection and 2 seconds later the idiot lights started to dimly lightup. Then on the way home, st insections with low revs the lights come back on dimly then when I get to higher revs as I move down the road they go off. This seems to be the classic symptoms of a bad alternator. I had this happen before, but to be sure, I have a few questions. Are the brushes part of the voltage regulator piece that you can buy for around $24 or $30 if I go with the Bosch unit. Also are there different brands of alternators so then I would have to worry about which voltage regulator kit to get? Or is there only one kind of alternator for my year and all the voltage regulators will fit?
