k&n filter? 900 1993

I just bought a new set of tires today. While talking to the shop owner, he said that the best thing I could do for the car would be to dump the paper air filter and drop in a K&N, which (conveniently) he could sell me. After reading a bit about them, I'm not convinced that the flat OEM looking version would make any difference at all, other than not having to replace the filter at the usual intervals. Can anyone offer commentary either way? This is for a '93 turbo wagon, btw.

Thanks
Eric
