Steering Rack replacement 200

Hello everyone. I am a long time lurker / first time poster. I put new Virgo Wheels on my 91 240 last week and while doing so noticed a little wobble in the wheels. Hard to say where it was originating from but since I had already done the ball joints and bushings within the last 2 years I decided the best course of action was to check the bearings. They seemed a wee bit too loose in their cages so I replaced them. Though the ride was a little improved I still noticed a bit of shimmy in the steering wheel at mid-range speeds. I jacked the car up again and this time moved the tierod boot down to check the knuckle. That seemed tight but the rack piston is where I finally found the play. Searching the web I have found prices on 'reman' racks from $67.40 (really!) to over $600. This leaves me scratching my head. I only want to have to do this once but I am also very frugal (my wife says cheap). What is your experience with rack replacement and where would you recommend getting one? Thanks for your time, Dan
