starting issues 200 1989

I have an 89 245 that is giving me grief at the moment when I turn the key to start the car most of the time its perfect but.. a few times the motor fires up only for a few seconds then dies,so I try again and most of the time it fires right back up but..now it happened a a few moments ago where the car would NOT DO ANYTHING no starter trying to engage, nothing at all,the idiot lights come on with the key being turned and if I turn the headlights on while trying to start the car they dim but nothing happening at the starter itself, then I tried again after a few minutes and guess what? it started!! what is going on here? is it a bad ground somewhere or a circuit going out anything else I can check,a fuse or something before taking it to my mechanic?
please help me!
Marc
