Ticking in the engine S90-V90

Hey guys,

i may have asked this before, but i can't seem to find my old thread. Anyway, here goes one more time: My wife's V90 develops a weird ticking sound from the back of the block/head after it's been idling for a couple minutes. For instance, if there's a line at the McD's drivethru, it's going pretty loud by the time you reach the window where they hand you the food. The moment you accelerate, it goes away. If it's in what I call "tick mode," the noise will come back immediately if you just rev the engine. But if you drive around the block, the problem resets itself and will take a while of idling to come back.

Is this an oil problem? I've read in a few places (including the FAQ) that Synthetic oil will minimize this problem. Anyone had this experience? I'm thinking about making the switch, but the car's only got 120k religiously serviced miles.

thanks,
Eric
