bizarre electricals 700 1988

I was about to buy this 740 SW yesterday but when checking lights, found no brake lights and no L turn signal (bulbs and fuses ok) Then when I put the high beams on, the engine cut out. (No coincidence; did this repeatedly) AND at the same time the brake lights and L turn signal came on... I walked away but everything else about this car was sweet ($600. 200k miles, a/c and cruise that worked, smooth engine performance, no strange noises, good repair records) Is this a common i.e. cheap fix or a hairball?
