How can I check 'check engine' codes for 1990 240 without a code detector? 200 1990

Check engine light came on about 2 months ago. Began to idle extremely rough. I brought it to local "mechanic" shop. Diagnosis: plug broke off in block, needed new wires and distributor....DONE

3 weeks later......check engine light came on. Began to idle extremely rough. Deja vu........."Needs to have intake gasket and seal kit for each injector....$400"....seemed shady. So, of course I'll do it myself. Have replaced injector seals. Still idles ROUGH.

I need to check what the code is. How can I do that??
