Reassembly of steering column 900

I took out my steering column to rectify a mal-positioned column. The top of the column was sticking too far out from the steering trim and the steering was not engaging the indicator lever. Some shop installed the column incorrectly so I've no idea what the column bits and pieces are supposed to go together as volvo intended.

Anyway I'm putting it back again and can't get it right. A couple of questions.

I need to install the steering column first inside the car before connecting it to the upper u-joint?

The circlip at the upper end of the shaft, is it supposed to rest in the groove showed by the left arrow or the right arrow? I've tried putting the circlip at the right arrow position and the column would sink down.

Putting the circlip at the left arrow puts the column in a very tight position with the spring beneath trying to pull the column down on the ignition housing.

Appreciate any help or any tips to get this right. Thanks!
