Driver's door hinge spring failure? Door won't stay open if on even a slight grade 200

Sorry for a dumb question, but I did a search here on this topic, but didn't get the answers I'm seeking. None of the 240 manuals (Haynes, Chilton, or Bentley) cover this at all.

The driver's door on my 1990 245 has lost all its ability to remain open. It no longer resists gravity if parked on even a slight grade, or even a mild breeze.

Is this simply caused by a spring that has lost its springy-ness from 20 years of use?

Can I replace the spring with a junk yard spring (probably from a rear passenger door, with less wear on the spring)?

...or is something else going on?
