1994 940 Wagon - Automatic 900 1994

Hey Guys - I just picked up this wagon for my wife. Its in fantastic condition and has been maintained really well but there are a few minor issues I need to take care of. This is my 1st in the 900 series and looking under the hood is a big change from all the 240's I have been driving over the years.

Anyway issue #1
Fuel gauge doesnt work completely. Most of the time it shows empty but if I put say $25-$30 of gas in it will go up to about 1/3 of a tank and the low fuel warning light goes off but after 40 or 50 miles it goes back to empty. At first I thought the float ball might be offline but now I am thinking its something in the cluster. Any ideas on this one?

#2 - there is a weird tapping sound coming from the center of the dash. Almost sounds like popcorn or someone tapping with a pencil. Its inside the dash center/passenger area and I have no clue what this could be. It happens on and off. I dont see anything under the hood along the firewall that could be the cause.

#3 - the shift button is not working. I read the FAQ articles and previous post in the archives and understand that there is a micro switch in there that goes bad. Here is my question. I pulled the shifter knob off and we have been driving it for about a week with just the up-rod. We can push the top of the rod down on the top of the stem and move into gear this way. If the micro switch was bad would we be able to do this? If I put the actual shifter back on the built in button does not work. It doesnt do anything. I went to the salvage yard and got another shifter and it didnt work either. Could it be the actual push button on the shifter handle or am I way off base here?

Lastly - the front end wheel area has a rattle. it almost sounds like sheet metal vibrating around but I havent been able to locate the source for the noise.

As usual thanks in advance for any suggestions. We picked this one up for $1300 - leather interior and body is in perfect condition. 140k miles and timing belt was recently done. It has all the bells and whistle Volvo offered and so far seems to be a great car, minus the above issues. Cheers
