B23 vs B230 Specs: Quick Question... 200

In looking through my Bentley book the other day, I noticed the B230 makes the same torque number as the '84 Auto trans B23 at 1000 rpm less. How did Volvo accomplish this as the compression was lowered for the B230? Did Olaf change the cam timing slightly? Curious minds want to know!
