Sounds like somebody stripped the threads out of the head at some point, then fixed it with a Helicoil (brand name for a thread insert).

Personally, I don't like thread inserts. They have their place -- like for re-threading spark plug holes, where your options are limited. But if you don't *have* to use them... don't. For this application, you're much better off re-threading the hole one size up and using a larger stud (IMHO). I just went through this when I had the head off my 945T. The front-most exhaust stud broke off upon removal. The larger stud was a better solution... again, IMHO.
