Advice on where to start 444-544 1956

Hello,

A gasoline engine needs 3 things to run, fuel, spark & compression.

If you tried to pour fuel directly into the carburetors, you may have flooded it, unless you pulled the float bowl covers and poured the gas into the float bowls.

A better technique is to spray some engine starter fluid or carburetor cleaner while cranking to see if the engine will run if you think you have a fuel problem.

If you can get it to run that way then you have a fuel delivery problem, IE fuel pump, fuel line or fuel tank.

There are several ways to test spark. You can use a timing light or you can pull the coil wire out a little and listen for arcing when you try to start the car. The latter technique is easier with a helper turning the key or you can use a remote starter switch connected to the starter if you are by yourself.

If you do not have spark, it may not be an ignition problem, so next check to see if the camshaft is moving just in case the timing gear is broken. If the timing gear is broken, you will not have spark as the distributor will not turn.

The easiest way to check the camshaft is to crank the engine with the distributor cap removed and observing the distributor rotor. If the rotor moves then the camshaft is turning.

Tools you should bring:

Fire extinguisher
Basic hand tools IE screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers
Remote starter switch
Timing light
Electrical tape
Bulk wire
Starter fluid
Clean rags
Spark plugs & spark plug socket or wrench
