Yes to both being flushed.

You DO NOT want one of those oil change places to do your transmission flush, there are several systems that they use. One of those is a pressure system to forces fluid through the transmission. Those are supposed to do more damage than good. The BB method is the only way to go on the flush IMOH, more on that in just a second.

There is a BB home brew flush rig for the Brakes, but not sure of the link. Have seen it done putting pressure on the fluid reservoir and with a rig that used a vacuum pulled on the bleeder valve to draw fluid into a jar at pro shops. That is on my to do list for this fall and I plan to use either the BB home brew or to buy one for one of the online places you read about here on the BB in Portland.

The transmission flush is the simple one, it does require 14 to 16 quarts of fluid. Dave Shannon has straight forward write up that I used to flush Inga's (86 245DL 262K) transmission. With three sets of hands on deck it went really fast. Had my darling wife womaning the ignition, my neighbor watching the fluid coming out of the car, and I was the pour guy. Found a funnel down at the auto part store that has a valve where you can control the rate and has a lip that was held into place by the dipstick clip. Took a couple of bottles of fluid to get the timing down. Once the guying pouring the fluid got with the plan, it went quickly. One person could do the job but there is a lot of watching, stopping the engine, pouring in more fluid, starting the car, and repeat as needed.

On the filter, I wasted my time busting that fill neck bolt loose (and that was a son of a biscuit eater and a PITA to get loose) and dropping the pan to get to the "filter". That is really a metal screen and at 200K the thing was completely clean. There have been several BB post by some of the more technically versed members (read them after the job) saying even Volvo considers that to no longer be a maintenance item. If you are really concerned, drop the drain plug and see if there is debris in the fluid. If it is clean leave it alone is my vote.
