With no alternator (running on battery, all warning lights lit) will the temperature guage work?

Background: Yesterday I found myself without any alternator belts (and therefore no water pump). This car is not long for the world anyway so I made the ~two mile dash home. I knew it would overheat but I was surprised that the temp guage was dead. I cannot recall whether or not it worked prior to losing the belts (it was the first time I'd driven this car).
