Auto trans shift linkage on backwards? 200

I've had some probs recently with the linkage from my shift lever to my auto transmission on my 1992 245. The retaining clip popped off and I wasn't able to shift into or out of gear. I installed a new clip, but to my surprise it only lasted a couple weeks.

I probably need new bushings and the adjustment was really sloppy and loose. I'm also wondering if the rod has been installed backwards and if it needs to be flipped around.

I've posted a picture. As I found it, the clevis is attached to the transmission lever. In illustrations in both the Hanes and Bentley manuals it's the rod end that's attached to the lever, not the clevis.

Do I need to turn the rod around? Amm I using the right retaining ring?
