lights flickering 200 1992

The interior lights and headlights have been dimming and brightening when the engine is running. The alternator light does not come on. When I hit the gas to get more RPMs the flickering speeds up but does not go away. Any ideas? When I am driving at night other drivers think that i am trying to send morse code.
