oxygen sensor another question 200 1989

WE were told to use up regular gas in tank and fill with high octane and re-set the check engine light. We did that and the light came on again, but we were told to drive it and get the gas circulating and that should make the light go out. Anyone heard of this, it was diagnosed as needing an oxygen sensor replaced and this is supposed to cure it on the theory that it just needs a better quality gas??
