Floppin' Loose! 1800 1967

My doctor heard about Kent and Me and Wade's 66 1800, and he and his daughter decided she
had to have one.
It is a 67, and it showed up yesterday from another state with "transmission issues",
stuck in 3rd gear, with the shift lever feeling like it was not hooked to anything.
He very capably drove it from his house over to mine in 3rd gear only (clutch and low speed
torque seem fine).
I took the shift lever out and found the oil level high enough that I couldn't see what the
lever hooked to inside! I fished around and found a brass socket hooked to a shaft that
turns and moves forward and backward but it doesn't seem to be hooked to anything either.
Have any of you experienced anything like this?
I assume I first need to drain some oil and then drop the tranny at least far enough to get the lid off it.
Any suggestions will be cheerfully entertained, and if you see a similar post elsewhere,
please don't be inflamed!
