Is there some trick for getting the opening in the timing gear case exactly centered over the hub? The green book says there should be .004" between the hub and the case all around. It shows a tool, SVO 2438, for effecting this centering.
Currently my situation is that there is less than .004" clearance at the top (in fact it is touching at the very top) of the hub over a span of about 90 degs; .004" at the sides and .008" at the 6:00 o'clock position. The hub went on smoothly and drew up nicely without binding.
I have tried everything I can think off to raise the case and nothing has worked.
I rotated the crank 180 deg and the situation remains the same so from this I conclude that the hub is not cocked. Short of acquiring the SVO, which may be difficult, is there some magic way to get the case centered or should should I simply tighten it all up, put the seal in (I'll be using a new felt seal) and hope the squeal isn't too annoying?
In retrospect I realize I should have measured the gap before removing the case. It may have been this way previously. In fact there is a narrow band of wear around the periphery of the hub about where the case contacts it, so this problem may be long standing.
For those who haven't read my earlier threads, I am finishing up the installation of steel gears.
Thanks as always.
