volvo not starting 200 1989

I have an 89 volvo 240 sedan that stopped running. It drove fine all day, then it just shut off after adjusting the air conditioning/heater control knob (10-15 seconds later it shut off). It would turn over but was dragging a little. Then got slower and slower until it just drags so to speak. The dash and head lights fade out when the car tries to turn over. Looked at the usual stuff like the battery, all connections to the coil, the fuse for the pumps, etc. Could not find out the problem. I hope the ECU did not get fried or something, any help with this problem would be a god send.
