So this morning I topped up the fluid level again, manually cycled the kickdown cable a couple times at the carb linkage, and rapped on the transmission case in a couple areas with a screwdriver handle.

Result: seems to work normally now. Not sure what (if any) of the above steps was the cure . . . but I think a filter and fluid change is probably still the best course of immediate action.
