940 non turbo water pump leak 900 1994

I have 205,000 miles on my car. I am not a mechanic; just possess some theoretical knowledge as a result of this website.

I am on my third water pump.

Current symptoms:

1. As soon as I pour water into the expansion tank, I can see the water pouring out from the bottom of the water pump.

2. When I cold start the car and drive it, normally the heat indicator used to come to the middle after about a mile's worth of driving. Now it comes to the middle with a quarter of a mile and stays there.

Questions:

1. Do I need to replace the entire water pump or just replace the gasket kit items?

2. Since the water is pouring out from the bottom of the water pump, there shouldn't be any water left in the radiator or the cooling system. Why then is the heat indicator just staying in the middle, instead of going to the "Hot" side?
