How does a rotor go bad? 900 1992

Hi All
I am about to change distributor cap and rotor and was thinking, of all the times I have done so, I have never seen a rotor that looked really bad. I have seen caps look very very bad but all the rotors I have removed are now sitting in my garage and none look like with a little cleaning up they wouldnt still perform thier stated mission. Is there something inside the rotor that degrades? I know they are cheap and will likely continue to replace them just cause....but
do I need to?
Matt
