Pinging under Load 200 1983

Yes - check ignition timing, it's supposed to be 12deg BTC. Remove and plug the vacuum hose at the ignition control module, and make sure the engine is at normal idle RPM. I checked the timing marks on the belt cover when I had the head off (and could establish true Top Centre of #1 piston) and they were spot on, so I would say they can be trusted.

On my 83, cleaning the chambers of carbon deposits, also the piston tops, and setting timing to spec helped with the pinging, if not eliminating it totally.

Interesting that Volvo reduced the compression ratio considerably when they replaced these B23's with the B230!
