If it works intermittently, good chance the trans is dirty. If you plan to change the filter, (I'd recommend it) you might want to put in some trans-x. That stuff will clean the hell out of the inside of the trans. Run it for a week or so, then drain and refill.

There are friction modifiers you can play with too, on older transmissions that are not as tight as they should be, but they can also speed up the inevitable.

If I remember right, these things don't have coolers. That don't play well in the states where it gets real hot. If you can keep an automatic cool and adjusted it will live forever.
