No response from Shift Lever 200

I have a 1990 245 sedan with an automatic transmission. This morning it all of a sudden would not go into drive or any gear. Then out of the blue in engaged into drive. When I stop and attempt to move the floor mounted shift lever into park it does nothing and remains in drive. When I turn the car off the transmission releases into neutral. When I start the car back up it is still in drive and the lever does nothing to change that.

Is there an electronic sensor that identifies what gear the transission should be in or some sort of mechanical cable?
