grinding noise on initial acceleration 700 1990

1990 Volvo 740GL (255,000 miles)

The car has developed a grinding noise, coming somewhere in the engine compartment. I've had the shop check the motor and transmission mounts (replaced last year-Ipd components). The only thing they found was some slack in the carrier bearing. I've noticed that I hear/feel the grinding noise when the wheel is turned the slightest direction to the left or right. It also does it with the wheel centered. I'm also getting a strange odor.....not rubber burning. Any help is greatly appreciated.
