Howdy all!
Almost a year later and now my tenacity is wearing away...need your help!
I have an awesome 1993 240 wagon with rare 5-speed tranny. Awesome MPG even when its already pushing 200k. But with pride comes frustration...
I noticed that when it rains and/or when I park my car overnight (especially on grass) during heavy dew, it was really hard starting, and once it starts, I have to keep it revving high or it would just die at idle and then it won't start up. Strangely, if I leave it alone for 15 to 20 minutes, it started up and idles just fine as if nothing happened. Normal power restored.
However, I also noticed that it would start bucking and hesitating whenever it started raining heavily in the middle of driving.
Do you know of any part or parts that is sensitive to moisture? Over the year when I was trying to isolate and solve this problem, I know the following facts that should not be the problem (many of them thanks to the assistance of Brickboard users' posted suggestions):
1)The fuel system has to be fine because during long hard starts, it was accompanied by smell of flooding. Even so, I already had the fuel filter and pump replaced to make sure.
2)Spark plugs, wires and rotor/cap arenew and by Bosch.
3)crank sensor replaced with a new one
4)AMM cleaned including contact points
5)Idle control unit (ICU)replaced with a new one
6)compression is fine- strong delivery of power (except when its raining hard)
7)air filter regularly changed
8)flame trap checked and cleaned (even when it was already looking clean)
8)vaccuum hoses are fine...I used quick start spray to test for leaks, and all negative.
9)Using quick-start spraying during the hard starting times didn't make difference. Seems there was no spark delivery during those times.
10)I've run all of the diagnostic code tests, but no faults shown.
I do really believe it has something to do with moisture affecting a part or parts. I just need to know which ones. A few months back, when the upper heater core hose (near back of the engine, behind the oil dipstick) sprung a leak while I was driving it really caused the engine to buck and heave. I thought it was THE problem (slow leaking over the time) but after I replaced with a new hose, the moisture from rain and some heavy overnight dew, the problem is still there! Back to the ol' drawing board.
I really need your advice and suggestions! What parts are suspectible to moisture? Many thanks advance for your help!
Oh, something that made me really stratch my head: how can rain affect the car's performance? I have engine splash guard underneath and I don't see any water leaking into the engine compartment thru the hood.
Aah, one more other thing- "check engine" light pops on from time to time after resetting.
