In addition to Smity's suggestions
The idle air control valve controls the idle speed so it must be working and clean. Throttle body and idle air control valve cleaning is important routine maintenance that should be done every year or two. They need to be removed for a thorough cleaning, $5 at autozone for a TB gasket and a cab of TB Cleaner.
