940 shutdown 900

Driving into work this morning, suddenly my 940 wagon shuts down. Was cruising down a hill, foot really wasn't on accelerator, and I look down and the tach and speedometer needles just dropped. Just as suddenly everything resumed normally and the engine was still running. O.K., a little concerned but it's still going so I keep going on to work
Almost to work at a stop light, it suddenly shuts down again, motor shuts down this time, I think Oh S___, igo to restart and it starts right back up, doesn't run rough, operates smoothly rest of the way. Anybody have any advice to what this might be?
I have had glitchy things happen to this car in the past, it currently has to be revved up to 2000 rpms just to make the SRS light go off (an indicator as me and my mechanic found out that alt. isn't charging battery and light hints that that's happening). As soon as you get light to go off, charging resumes.
