Mystery Mud in Cylinders 444-544

This weekend I pulled apart the rear brakes of my 544 and replaced the cylinders. One was not working at all, and the other was locking up.

When I pulled out the cylinder on the driver side, I noticed that the boot end was filled with a substance that I can only describe as mud with little rocks in it. It didn't look or feel like grease, and was brown (mud-like) in color. Any ideas as to what that might be? The rest of the interior of the drum was relatively clean... If it helps, the cylinder was made by lockheed...

I replaced both cylinders and pads, pressure bled the system, and now the brakes work :-), though the car pulls a bit to the passenger side when I brake.

Also, am I supposed to put grease in the end of the cylinder (where the little plunger thingie plugs into it)? I just slid them in there, but the old cylinders had some sort of mystery substance (mud?) there before...
