Stalling 240 200 1985

We have a mysterious problem with our 1985 244 GL, B230 engine, automatic transmission. It stalls intermittently and unpredictably, seems to be electrical, as it just stops, no stuttering or anything. It will restart immediately if I run the gearshift up and down from park to first a couple of times. Otherwise, it won't start. Is there some wiring near the shifter or linkage that is getting nudged, or maybe a neutral safety switch (?) misbehaving? Cap, wires and rotor are new, just changed the fuel filter. Otherwise it starts and runs just fine.
Thanks for any insights you may have.
