OD button is not OD 200 1988

I was just looking at and adding my .02 to the post on removing an auto tranny shift knob (to fix the ugly plastic shaft with the fake chrome that peels off) when I remembered this question that I've had for a long time: Why is the button on the driver side called an Overdrive button? It's not overdrive, it's downshift from 4 to 3. Great on hills or passing. But I think even Volvo calls it an overdrive button. Which it ain't.
