Just shorthand carry over from the standard shift M46 with the opposite mode, but you are correct. The 91 owner's manual I just happened to have in my lap calls it a "disengagement button". It reminds us to use it when (1) towing a trailer and (2) driving on hilly roads where precise speed control is desired.
