Symptoms of failing fuel pump? 200 1984

Occasionally I stutteringly lose acceleration (Yes, I made that word up...but it fits nicely). Mostly when I've my foot on the gas, but there's a faint stuttering while coasting. Should I be pricing a new "under the car" fuel pump? Do they slowly stop working, or all at once?

Note: A few years back one of the tubes in my trusty 240's fuel pump (the one in the gas tank) had a hole, so the car would suddenly die at just under 1/2 a tank.

I replaced the tube and the pump in the tank (just in case) and it's been working fine for a few years...so likely not that pump, I guess.

Thanks.
