Missing lights on instrment panel, alternator does not charge 900 1993

When I turn on the ignition key of my 93 940,usually all of the lights on the panel come on.
There are times when only the seatbelt and srs light come on, the two furthest on the right. If I fire off and drive the alternator does not charge and the car will die.
A tap with a rubber mallet on the top of the dash usually gets all of the lights to come on.
