Clutch Cable 140-160

In your experience how long do clutch cables last on early 140 models? The top part of the pedal travel seems a bit loose and the cable "creaks" a bit when I disengage the clutch. With 175K miles on the clock and winter coming (Colorado) I worry that an old and cold cable could easily snap. Are these worth replacing every 30K miles? Should I simply wait until it snaps (shifting an M40 without a clutch is not very much fun--never mind the prospect of starting from a dead stop)?
