B18: car sits, gas,"drains?', too much cranking. Help with tips please?

Have '62 544 in good mechanical shape. Also '67 122 wagon, equally good shape. Both have rebuilt SU's, (Rhys, Vancouver Island). Both cars behave the same in that if they sit a week or two, it takes a lot of cranking to get gas back up into carbs for starting. (At least that seems to be the case) Any tips for preventing this?

Or do I have two fuel pumps with bad check valves?
