Good morning Tyler,
What value ballast resistor? Too little and it won't solve the problem. Too big and you will have weak spark at best, maybe even won't run. If it is a nationally marketed coil (read that, Accel) get the specs and required ballast from the web site.
If you cannot find the specs on line, you have to use a bit of judgment. Measure the primary side of that coil. Choose a resistor that will bring the total resistance to something around 3 Ohms. Some coils require a bit more, some few require a bit less.
If you install the electronic distributor be sure that the coil and ballast provide the correct primary resistance or you will have even bigger headaches. Go to k-jet.org and get a copy of TP30432-2. With that Green Book you should be able to ID the electronic ignition and then you can find the correct coil specifications. It also has wiring diagrams that will prove worth their weight in gold.
I'm on my way to Houston after this post. I'll call later today.
