Leak at water pump metal tube 200 1991

I just replaced the water pump on a friends '91 while doing a timing belt replacement. It turns out that the rubber sleeve which seals the metal tube at the back of the pump leaks significantly.

I've heard that it's possible to remove the nut at the rear of the tube behind the engine in order to slide it backwards far enough to install a replacement sleeve. Has anyone done this and is it easier to gain access from above or below? It seems like a very tight squeeze back there. Thanks for any tips.

Jim
