Source for 1984 Odometer Gear? 200 1984

I'm a bit confused on finding a source for an odometer gear for my 1984 240.

So far I've found places that carry 1986 and newer odometer gears (IPD), but no luck for an '84. I'm assuming that it's cable-driven, but it's my daily driver right now, so don't want to disable the car until I do the repair (assuming that it can be driven with a torn up dash? I don't know yet..)

Just in case I'm chasing the wrong problem...
I bought the car with 312,000 on the odometer, but the owner said that it had broken a few years earlier.
Since then, it occasionally runs for a few miles, then stops again.
Oddly enough, one time it ran for 72 miles on a 100-mile trip (according to the highway mile markers)...don't know if it stopped and started along the way, or consistently runs slow.
Broken tooth on the gear?

Thanks for any ideas...I really want to do regular maintenance on the car, but having a hard time without a reliable odometer.
