I need a B230 non-turbo engine with reasonably low miles to go in a 1990 740 wagon that is equipped with an automatic transmission. I’m looking for a decent used engine, not a buildable core.
Furthermore, I need to know the year range of engines to look for that will make this swap reasonably painless. I don’t want to get into changing a bunch of wiring harnesses for different sensors, computers, etcetera. I THINK the car is a Rex Regina, but I can’t remember for sure. If that info is buried in the VIN, I should be able to get it.
What issues do I get into if I find an engine from a 240 or 940? What if I find one that is from a standard transmission car, do I just have to change the pilot bushing or is there more to it than that? I think you get the basic nature if my questions, but let me know if I have not supplied enough information to get a good answer.
I thought I saw a post once that indicated it was not too hard to put a Bosch engine in a Rex car if you still had the Rex engine to scarf parts from. Is this so, and is the reverse true as well?
If you saw my earlier post about this situation, this is the one failed on a trip from Boulder, Colorado to Louisville, Kentucky. It went down about 60 miles southeast of Boulder, Colorado. It belongs to friends of mine, and I sold it to them.
It is now sitting at a shop in Boulder, there is a rod through the block, and the mechanic who owns the shop seems like a good guy to deal with.
It would be nice to find an engine near Boulder (which is near Denver), but finding one near Kentucky might work also since I could pick it up and I am overdue for a trip to the west coast. Other places could be considered as well if the shipping charge is not a deal breaker. I have never shipped an engine. If anyone has, and knows anything about shipping costs, let me know.
As usual, keeping the costs down in this endeavor is important.
