I'm in the process of replacing my in-tank pump. During the process I found:

*Bad wiring between the connector and the ring terminal(probably at the hermetic seal through the top plate) -- it was pried up due to rust
*Ripped pickup sock
*Cracked tube (intank pump pressure side) where it exits the top plate of the sender) -- maybe this is where the gas smell was coming from and why the main pump always sounded like it was cavitating.

Anyway -- The new pump, sock and sender are assembled and ready to go in tonight.

My question is... during the process, although I was very careful to clean the area as much as possible before disassambly, a few small chips of rust fell into the tank. There is also a pretty good chance that as I install the gangly assembly I might knock a bit more in. Is this a cause for concern?? The opening on the tank is masked off with tape right now I think I'll spend a few extra minutes cleaning the area before I re-assemble.

Finally, the 12mm ID hose from the sender to the main pump: As I said, things were very rusty and there was a bit of rust on the inside of the 12mm hose right where it connects to the sender output, presumably deposited from the rusty fitting Should I replace that hose, or remove from thh pump side and thoroughly clean. Art Benstein said that specific id is hard to come by I would think that 1/2" ID (12.7mm) fuel injection hose should work.
