Wiring harness that turns to dust when touched...HELP! 200

Ok, so I just THANKFULLY got my waterpump and timing belt in, and she runs like a TOP!
I was tightening the alternator, and putting pressure on the top of the alternator so that I can tighten up the adjustment nut.....turns out that The alternator wire got pinched and was arcing on the alternator housing. Upon further inspection, I have found that the wiring harness is the "turns to chalk" type. At the big gray connector on the firewall, there is evidence of the wires all cracking, exposing the conductor **DANGEROUS***, and the wire going to the alternator (thin one), is all just conductor. My tightening ritual of the alternator belt crushed the wire and all of the insulation fell off.

My question:
Can I just replace the engine bay harness?
What years are compatible with the "non chalk-turning" wiring harnesses that I can swap it out with?

thanks for your help...conquering the timing belt today was sweet, but bittersweet upon my finding of the bum wiring harness.
Thanks
Kevin
