New to battery / alternator troubleshooting 200 1993

Wow, seems like everyone is currently having battery and alternator troubles with their 240. I am too, but I'll read those threads before asking the questions again here.

Three quick questions:
How do I determine the battery's current health? Do I measure at the posts for both voltage (around 12V) and amperage (above 600amp)?

What's the recommended procedure for charging the battery out of the car? How can I monitor the battery level during the charge to be sure I don't over charge it?

I tried to test current draw using Bentley's method of disconnecting the negative battery wire and measuring from it to the negative battery post. I read 0ma. That can't be right, since the clock is working. Is my $10 voltmeter not up to the job, or is there a better way to test it?

Thanks!
