Holding the intermediate shaft gear stationary 700 1991

Did not find this in the FAQs.

I have removed the bolt holding this gear at at a yard, putting a screwdriver through one of the holes and wedging it while braking it loose ...but I am not sure if this is the best way.

I am to replace the intermediate shaft seal on my sis 740. Is this the best way to hold it steady and to re-tighten?

Also is there a better way than a wedged screwdriver to take care of the cam gear?

Thanks
