Transmission swap: AW71 to manual, '90 240 200

Hi all,

My '90 wagon, otherwise a great car, has an AW71 that is, I'm afraid, about to give up the ghost. It clunks when going into reverse, and as of yesterday, no longer shifts into 4th. And..... I just want a manual wagon. My son's '83 manual, w/full IPD suspension, is a joy to drive.

I've read some of the posts about doing a conversion to a manual tranny, but still have a couple of questions:

- When did Volvo stop pre-drilling the holes for the manual pedalset?

- If I stay with someone close to my '90 wagon, the bellhousing will have a location for the correct crank position sensor, yes? If I go with an earlier vintage, do I have to modify the bellhousing to accomodate the CPS?

- When pulling a tranny, Bentley advises to take care to mark the connection between the tranny and the crankshaft, in order to put it back together the same way. With a swap, is this connection a "try it and see" thing?
